Aaron Rothert, attorney and new Atticus coach, recently published the following advice in the Family Law Journal. We thought it was worth repeating his words of wisdom in this blog for those of you who are interested in re-energizing your marketing efforts for the coming year.

Your hobbies, passions and interests keep life fresh and vibrant but are frequently set aside when you become overwhelmed trying to keep up with the demands of your law practice. Often any extra time you might have is dedicated to marketing. If this describes your situation, why not combine the two and use your hobbies, interests and passions to bring a renewed sense of fun to your marketing?

To begin this process, identify the hobbies, passions and interests that you’ve set aside and miss the most. Many attorneys, for example, have set aside playing sports. If sports aren’t your focus, consider reigniting your passion for photography, animals, cooking or travel. If those types of hobbies don’t work for you consider joining a charitable organization that improves the community or helps the disadvantaged. Just be sure it’s a cause you can authentically support.

Once this is done, consider how to not only engage in those activities but involve others as well. An energetic family law attorney from Canada, for example, leverages his love of cycling and cooking by organizing a cycling trip to Italy every year or so, complete with cooking lessons and meals at each stop. To reach those who can’t make the trip, he blogs about the event.

Similarly, another attorney who’s passionate about paddle boarding began offering paddle board lessons to his clients. The client-centric lessons became so popular they expanded to include other attorneys and referral sources, eventually growing into a signature event for the firm. Yet another attorney started his own charity, “Lawyers for Literacy,” to promote increased reading and comprehension skills in his community.

What all of these efforts have in common is the idea that you can have fun doing what you love and improving your community while building rapport with potential clients and referral sources. Taking your passion public can help raise your profile, create fun, do good in the community. It’s a win-win scenario that’s hard to beat.
